What is Plantar Fasciitis and its symptoms

If you have pain and stiffness in the bottom of your feet and heel, you may have a problem called plantar fasciitis.

Plantar fasciitis is irritation and swelling of the thick tissue on the bottom of your foot. The tissue is called plantar fascia. It connects your heel bone to your toes, creating the arch of your foot. Plantar fasciitis occurs when you overstretch or overuse this thick band of tissue. It can be painful and make it hard to walk.

How do you know if you have plantar fasciitis? You will probably have pain and stiffness in the bottom of your foot or heel. The pain may be dull or sharp. The bottom of your foot may ache or burn. The pain is usually worse in the morning when you take your first steps, after standing or sitting for a while, when you climb stairs, or after you exercise.

Treatment

Your provider will often recommend these steps first:

  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) to reduce pain and inflammation.

  • Physical therapy with emphasis on heel and foot stretching exercises.

  • Night splints to wear while sleeping to stretch the foot.

  • Resting as much as possible for at least a week.

  • Wearing shoes with good support and cushions.

How Massage Helps?

Recent studies have shown that remedial massage can offer significant benefits in the treatment of jogger's heel or plantar fasciitis. Remedial massage therapists offer targeted treatment to the lower legs, ankle and foot to improve your ankle mobility and positioning of the foot.

However, it is not a good idea to use very forceful massage on the plantar fascia itself because it usually just ends up irritating the injury and may even bruise and injure the little nerves under the foot. You are looking for comfortable or at most "comfortably uncomfortable" pressure.

If you are having a trouble of walking, pain, sore and tight under your foot. Call us for FREE consultation and with this treatment, you will be able to claim for health rebate.
